Nigerians have been urged to take an active role in protecting the integrity of the 2027 general elections, as former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stressed that the sanctity of the ballot must not be compromised.

In a message titled “Our Votes Must Count” shared on his official X handle on Monday, Obi appealed to citizens to remain at their polling units after voting to observe the counting and transmission of results, describing civic vigilance as essential to credible polls.

He warned that the forthcoming election must mark a departure from past experiences, insisting that every ballot cast should be reflected in the final outcome.

“Unlike in the past, in 2027 our votes must count, and all those who are there not to count the votes will be counted among those destroying Nigeria,” he stated.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, further charged voters to closely monitor proceedings at their polling units to promote transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.

“I encourage everyone to remain at the polling units after voting to count and witness the counting and transmission of results,” he said.

Obi also warned that individuals who attempt to obstruct the process would face legal consequences.

Reaffirming his position, Obi warned that individuals or groups who attempt to subvert the will of the electorate would be deemed enemies of Nigeria’s democratic progress and made to face legal consequences.

He maintained that safeguarding the ballot was non-negotiable, stressing that any failure to properly account for votes cast would amount to an assault on the nation’s future.
