Lagos State – In a significant development ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections scheduled for July 12, the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has unveiled 26 chairmanship candidates. This announcement was made by Pastor Dayo Ekong, the chairperson of the faction in Lagos State, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) recently acknowledged the existence of three factions of the Labour Party within the state, each operating under different names. However, it specified that only one faction had formally invited the commission to oversee its primaries.

In preparation for the elections, LASIEC has reached out to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for guidance on the situation concerning the multiple factions, indicating a proactive approach to ensure a smooth electoral process.

Pastor Ekong revealed that the primaries for the chairmanship candidates were conducted across 26 locations in the state on Friday. Notably, she mentioned that candidates were selected for 26 out of the 57 councils, with the decision made not to field candidates in 30 councils for strategic reasons. This strategic manoeuvring highlights the faction’s focus on maximizing its influence in the upcoming elections.

As the July 12 elections draw near, the developments within the Labour Party in Lagos State underline the complexities of party politics and the challenges that factions face. The outcome of these elections could significantly impact the political landscape in the region, as local governance remains a critical aspect of community development and engagement.
