Four people remain in critical condition after a car drove into a crowd of Liverpool fans during the club’s Premier League title parade, the city’s mayor confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday evening in a packed city centre as around one million people gathered along a 10-mile route to celebrate Liverpool’s title triumph. Police said the crash happened as the event was winding down.
Videos on social media showed a grey people-carrier ploughing through the crowd on a street that had been closed to traffic, dragging people under its wheels. Dozens were injured, with 27 taken to hospital, including children.
Liverpool Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram said, “There are still four people who are very, very ill in hospital. We are hoping of course that they pull through.”
Police described the incident as isolated and not terrorism-related. A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested.
Officials moved quickly to release the suspect’s details to counter online speculation.
“There are some elements that try to inflame situations with misinformation,” Rotheram told the BBC. “We needed to fill that vacuum before it did damage.”
The city is still reeling from the shock, just days after the club’s historic celebrations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the emergency response, saying: “Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror.”
