The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed Peter Obi’s claims about threats to his life.
Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had claimed that a comment by the APC spokesman Felix Morka had put him and his family in danger.
But the National Chairman of the APC Abdullahi Ganduje described Obi’s claims as false and “cheer mischief”.
“The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has described it as unfortunate and misleading claims attributed to Mr Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, alleging threats to his life,” the statement signed by Ganduje read.
Ganduje expressed displeasure over Obi’s claim and labelled it as “a malicious lie aimed at seeking attention and playing the victim for emotional blackmail”.
“By falsely claiming that Morka threatened his life, Mr Obi has libelled Morka in the extreme and incited his online supporters to issue death threats against Morka and his family,” Ganduje said.
The APC chieftain said as a public figure, Obi has a responsibility to give accurate information, defending the party’s spokesman whom he said was simply discharging his duties.
“Morka’s comments during the interview were strictly in response to a question referencing ‘prophets of doom’ and ‘voodoo economics.’ Nothing in his statement constituted or suggested a threat to Obi or anyone else,” he said.
“Does Mr. Obi expect the APC to fold its arms and allow the opposition to propagate falsehoods without any response?” Ganduje queried, adding that the APC will continue to counter baseless allegations against the President Bola Tinubu-led government with facts.
The APC chief said the party stands by Morka in his “effort to defend the Federal Government and set the records straight against disinformation by desperate politicians”.
