The newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Eric Chelle has opened up about his decision to leave his role at Algerian club MC Oran for the opportunity to lead the three-time African champions.

Speaking after his final game in charge of MC Oran, a hard-fought 1-0 victory over ES Setif in the Algeria Cup, Chelle expressed gratitude to the club and its fans but revealed why the lure of managing the Super Eagles was impossible to resist.

“I thank the Hamraoua fans, the people of Oran, and all Algerians for their incredible support. MC Oran will always have a special place in my heart,” Chelle said in an emotional farewell. “However, one cannot refuse the chance to lead one of the best teams in Africa and the world.”

The 47-year-old acknowledged that MC Oran officials were keen for him to stay but felt the opportunity to coach Nigeria was too significant to pass up.

“This is my last match with MC Oran. From Monday, I’ll be in Nigeria to begin this new chapter,” he announced.

Chelle, a former defender with Malian roots, brings a wealth of experience to the Super Eagles as they seek to reclaim dominance on the African and global stage.

With his appointment, Chelle is poised to navigate Nigeria through crucial tournaments and qualifiers, a challenge he says he is ready to embrace with pride and determination.

“This is more than just a job, it’s an honor. Coaching the Super Eagles is a dream for any coach in Africa. I am looking forward to making my mark with this talented team,” Chelle stated.
