Essential Tips to Combat ATM Card Scams

March 18, 2025

In this edition of Cybersecurity awareness, We shall be talking about ATM card scams as it is a growing concern. Also, it’s essential to take proactive steps to safeguard your cards and personal information.
Here are some practical tips to protect yourself from ATM card fraud:

1. Protect Your PIN (Personal Identification Number)

   – Keep it confidential: Never share your PIN, not even with bank personnel, family, or friends.

   – Shield the keypad: Always cover the keypad with your hand while entering your PIN at ATMs or point-of-sale terminals.

   – Avoid obvious choices: Don’t use easily guessed numbers, such as your birthdate or phone number.

   – Memorize your PIN: Refrain from writing it down or storing it on your phone. If you must write it down, keep it in a secure location.

2. Be Cautious at ATMs

   – Inspect the machine: Look for any unusual devices or attachments on the card slot or keypad that could indicate skimming.

   – Choose wisely: Use ATMs in well-lit, secure areas, such as inside bank branches or busy public places.

   – Leave if suspicious: If the ATM behaves unexpectedly (e.g., retains your card or shows unusual messages), cancel the transaction and exit promptly. Avoid using ATMs while in transit, especially after hours or on weekends, as you may not be able to retrieve a lost card until business days.

   – Watch for cameras: Be aware of hidden cameras that may capture your PIN entry.

3. Monitor Your Bank Accounts Regularly

   – Review your statements: Frequently check your bank statements and transaction history for any unauthorized charges.

   – Set up alerts: Enable SMS or email notifications for all transactions to stay informed about your account activity.

   – Report suspicious transactions: Contact your bank immediately if you notice unfamiliar transactions.

4. Use Secure ATMs and Payment Terminals

   – Stick to trusted sources: Use ATMs operated by reputable banks or financial institutions.

   – Avoid isolated ATMs: Standalone ATMs in remote or poorly monitored areas are at a higher risk of tampering.

   – Examine card readers: When using your card at retail locations, ensure the card reader looks legitimate and untampered.

5. Protect Your Card Information

   – Keep details private: Never share your card number, CVV, or expiration date over phone, email, or text.

   – Shop securely online: When making purchases, verify that the website is secure (look for “https://” and a padlock icon).

6. Utilize Contactless Payments or Mobile Wallets

   – Enable contactless features: Use contactless cards or mobile wallets (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) to minimize the risk of card skimming.

   – Take advantage of tokenization: Mobile wallets use tokenization to replace your card details with a unique code, adding an extra layer of security.

7. Report Lost or Stolen Cards Immediately

   – Act quickly: Ensure not to keep ATM cards in phone pouch. So that in case of phone loss or theft, whoever steals the phone won’t be able to use the stolen phone to make transactions with the cards by sending OTPs to himself via the stolen phone. If your card is lost or stolen, report it to your bank immediately to block the card and prevent unauthorized transactions.

   – Keep emergency contacts: Save your bank’s customer service number for quick access in emergencies.

8. Be Aware of Common Scams

   – Card trapping: Fraudsters may use devices to trap your card in the ATM. If your card is not returned after a transaction, contact your bank immediately.

   – Skimming awareness: Criminals may install devices on ATMs to steal card data; always inspect the machine before use.

   – Watch for shoulder surfers: Be cautious of individuals standing too close at ATMs who may try to see your PIN or card information.

9. Use Strong Passwords for Online Banking

   – Create unique passwords: Use strong and distinct passwords for your online banking accounts and update them regularly.

   – Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Add an extra security layer to your online banking by implementing 2FA.

10. Educate Yourself

   – Stay updated: Keep informed about the latest scams and fraud techniques.

   – Check official sources: Regularly visit your bank’s website or official communications for security tips and updates.

By following these guidelines, you can significantly lower your risk of becoming a victim of ATM card scams. Always remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
