One year ago, the world was profoundly affected by the tragic news of a helicopter accident in the USA that claimed several lives, including that of Herbert Wigwe. A pioneering figure in the banking sector, Wigwe significantly influenced Access Bank and the financial industry as a whole. His dedication to innovation, excellence, and community betterment will be cherished for years to come.

On Sunday, tributes poured in from prominent figures including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, French President Emmanuel Macron, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, all honoring the late Managing Director and CEO of Access Corporation. They hailed him as a creator of institutions and a champion for communities.

Herbert Wigwe lost his life on February 9, 2024, in a helicopter crash near Nipton, California. The tragedy also resulted in the loss of his wife, Doreen Chizoba Wigwe, their son Chizi, aged 29, former Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, and two crew members.

In remembrance, Access Corporation organized a memorial service in Lagos to mark the first anniversary of his passing. The event was attended by notable figures such as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Wale Edun, Emir of Kano Lamido Sanusi, and other key executives from the banking sector.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reflected on Wigwe’s visionary nature and his unwavering faith in Nigeria and Africa’s potential to overcome obstacles. He noted, “He was a cultivator of talent and enterprises, transforming dreams into achievements. His absence is profoundly felt in Lagos State, as there are initiatives that would have advanced more rapidly had he been here. Herbert facilitated partnerships and funding for state projects, making my role significantly easier.”

Herbert Wigwe is remembered for his impactful leadership, visionary contributions, and lasting legacy as a true architect of lives and institutions.

As we reflect on the legacy of the Wigwe family, we honor their contributions and the love they shared. May their memories continue to inspire us all, reminding us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Wigwe family and the Access Bank community during this difficult time. Let us come together in remembrance and support, ensuring that the legacy of Herbert, Moreen, and Chizi lives on in our hearts and actions.
