The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over what it described as a coordinated attempt to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to influence party structures.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, criticised INEC’s recent decision to delist him and other members of the party’s National Working Committee from its official records. He described the move as unlawful and politically motivated, calling for the removal of INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan.

INEC had explained that its action was based on a Court of Appeal directive to maintain the “status quo” pending the resolution of a leadership dispute within the ADC. However, Mark argued that the commission had misinterpreted the ruling, alleging that it had effectively created a leadership vacuum in the party.

The controversy stems from a prolonged leadership crisis within the ADC, which began in 2025 following disagreements over the tenure of former chairman Ralph Nwosu and the emergence of a new leadership team led by Mark. The dispute has since resulted in multiple court cases, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership.

Mark insisted that the current leadership was validly constituted during a National Executive Committee meeting in July 2025, which he said was monitored by INEC officials. He further accused the commission of ignoring earlier submissions confirming the leadership structure.

The ADC chairman warned that the development could undermine democratic principles, alleging that efforts were underway to weaken opposition voices and create a dominant-party system.

Nigeria’s political landscape has increasingly witnessed internal party disputes and legal battles, particularly within opposition parties, raising concerns about their readiness for future elections.

Observers say the unfolding situation highlights the delicate role of INEC in managing party disputes, noting that its decisions could significantly influence political stability and electoral credibility as the country approaches 2027.
