A powerful bloc within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is making moves to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race.
A source close to both Jonathan and the ADC disclosed on Friday that the former president is “seriously considering” a return to the ballot.
According to the source, influential figures in the ADC are keen on presenting Jonathan as their presidential candidate and have already reached out to him.
However, Jonathan is said to be weighing his options between loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), “which made him,” and the ADC, which he reportedly believes stands a strong chance of winning if it fields the right candidate.
“Former President Goodluck Jonathan is worried that certain persons with strong links to the Villa may still be in control of the PDP and could frustrate his chances if he seeks the ticket of that party,” the source revealed.
The source further noted that Jonathan’s hesitation about the ADC stems from his reluctance to run against Labour Party’s Peter Obi, as he feels indebted to the Igbo people for the strong support they gave him in the 2015 elections.
“Jonathan would run, except he fails to find a suitable platform,” the source added. “If he chooses our party (ADC), we will zone the presidency to the South. If he does not come to us, we will have no choice but to move north, because politics is about numbers and winning.”
