Presidential hopefuls under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have pledged to rally behind whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate as the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins.

This unanimous decision was made during a strategic caucus meeting of the party held in Abuja on Thursday. At the meeting, members were also directed to sever ties with other political parties where they still hold membership. While the resolution was adopted, no specific deadline was given for its enforcement.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed that the National Working Committee (NWC) is finalizing plans to conduct primaries in Osun and Ekiti States ahead of the off-cycle governorship polls.

“All presidential aspirants have pledged to support whoever secures the party’s ticket at the primaries. A clear order has been given for members to formally resign from other political parties, but the caucus did not set a timeline for compliance. The NWC will shortly announce the schedule for Osun and Ekiti governorship primaries,” the statement read in part.

The caucus also resolved to put aside discussions surrounding the African Democratic Alliance (ADA), suggesting the ADC is no longer pursuing the creation or registration of a separate political platform.

Among those who attended were ADC National Chairman, David Mark; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; the party’s National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf; former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; and former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi.

Though not physically present, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, sent a letter of apology and expressed his full support for the resolutions adopted.

Political observers believe the accord among the aspirants demonstrates a rare show of unity within the ADC, a move that could strengthen its internal cohesion and boost its chances as it positions for the 2027 presidential contest.
