Governor Ademola Adeleke has pledged to reclaim allocations belonging to Osun’s local government councils that were seized by the Federal Government.
He insists there is no legal or constitutional justification for the withholding of these funds.
Adeleke has also received backing from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Osun State Council of Obas.
Their intervention included issuing reports and letters asserting that the local government elections held in Osun on February 22, 2025 were valid, and that the chairmen and councillors elected then are the legitimate officeholders.
Meanwhile, legal action is underway. Osun State has filed a suit at the Supreme Court against the Attorney-General of the Federation, seeking a declaration that the federal withholding of these allocations is unlawful.
The state also wants an injunction to prevent further seizures, and for all withheld funds to be remitted to the eligible local government councils.
Governor Adeleke has emphasized respect for due process and the rule of law in the state’s insistence that the federal government release the funds.
He argues that previous court rulings, including one by the Court of Appeal on June 13, 2025, affirm the legitimacy of his administration’s local government leadership and thus the entitlement to allocations.
