AFCON Final Set for Heavyweight Clash as Senegal Stand Between Morocco and History
Morocco’s bid to end a 50-year wait for a second Africa Cup of Nations title will face its toughest possible test on Sunday, with Senegal standing firmly in their path in Rabat.
The final brings together Africa’s two most consistent and battle-hardened sides of recent years. Morocco, ranked 11th in the world, host the showdown at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, but Senegal arrive with pedigree, depth and a proven record of delivering on the biggest stage.
“This is the kind of final African football deserves,” Senegal coach Pape Thiaw said ahead of the contest. “We respect Morocco, but we believe in our quality and our ambition.”
Morocco: Defence, Control and Home Momentum
Morocco have built their run on control and discipline. They boast the best defensive record at the tournament, with five clean sheets and just one goal conceded, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has again been decisive, notably saving two penalties in the semi-final shootout against Nigeria.
Captain Achraf Hakimi anchors a side packed with experience, while Brahim Diaz, the tournament’s leading scorer, has provided cutting edge in attack. Backed by an intense home atmosphere and an unbeaten competitive home record stretching back to 2009, the Atlas Lions have turned Rabat into a stronghold.
For Walid Regragui, the final offers the chance to crown years of investment, planning and recent international progress with the one prize Morocco have not lifted since 1976.
Senegal: Experience, Firepower and Big-Game Mentality
If there is one team capable of derailing Morocco’s home charge, it is Senegal. The Teranga Lions arrive with one of the most dangerous attacks in the tournament and a squad shaped by experience in Africa and on the global stage
Sadio Mané once again showed his influence with the winning goal against Egypt in the semi-finals. The 33-year-old, a decisive figure in Senegal’s 2021 triumph, has hinted this may be his final AFCON appearance and is determined to make it count.
