Team Nigeria wrapped up its badminton tournament at the inaugural African School Games in Algeria on Thursday, earning a total of six medals, comprising two gold, three silver, and one bronze.
The first gold medal for Nigeria was won by Precious Adekunle, who displayed remarkable speed, skill, and tactical acumen to defeat her Egyptian opponent in the girls’ singles final. The second gold came from Edun Damilare, who demonstrated determination and resilience to triumph in a challenging boys’ singles final.
In the girls’ doubles final, the Adekunle sisters, Precious and Cynthia, delivered a commendable performance but ultimately finished with a silver medal after a closely contested match. Additionally, in the mixed doubles final, Edun David partnered with Cynthia Adekunle to secure another silver medal for Nigeria following a strong effort.
During the mixed team event, Ahmed Ayatulla and Masibau Faisat faced a tough semifinal against Tunisia. Ayatulla clinched victory in the boys’ match with a score of 3-1, but Tunisia triumphed 3-0 in the girls’ match against Faisat. Tunisia also narrowly won the doubles match 3-1, leading to an overall score of 2-1, which earned Nigeria a bronze medal.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Team Nigeria has garnered a total of eight medals across four sports, including two gold, four silver, and two bronze. The team is now set to turn its attention to athletics, which will commence on Friday.
