Manchester City’s defence of the FIFA Club World Cup came crashing down in Orlando as Al Hilal mounted a thrilling comeback to win 4-3 after extra time, ending Pep Guardiola’s perfect record in the tournament.

City struck first in controversial fashion when Bernardo Silva tapped home after a deflected clearance fell his way, with VAR quickly dismissing Al Hilal protests over a possible Gundogan handball.

Despite Yassine Bounou’s string of saves to keep it 1-0 at half-time, the Saudi side turned the tie on its head just after the break.

Marcos Leonardo levelled from close range before Malcom raced half the length of the field to slot past Ederson for a shock lead.

Erling Haaland swiftly equalised, and the match swung wildly as Malcolm was denied a penalty by a tight offside call.

Extra time beckoned after Ali Lajami cleared off the line to deny Haaland a late winner.

Al Hilal struck first in the added period through Kalidou Koulibaly’s header from a Rúben Neves corner, only for Phil Foden to level again for City with a superb volley from Rayan Cherki’s cross.

But Al Hilal had the final word in the 113th minute when Ederson’s save fell for Marcos Leonardo to bundle home, sealing a stunning win and setting up a quarter-final clash with Fluminense.
