Alcaraz Battles Past Rublev to Reach Wimbledon Quarters

ALCARAZ

Carlos Alcaraz overcame a shaky start to defeat Andrey Rublev in four sets on Sunday, keeping alive his bid for a third straight Wimbledon crown.

The second seed dropped the opening set in a tiebreak but rallied to win 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 under the Centre Court roof, lifting his level as the match wore on and thrilling a vocal crowd.

Rublev matched Alcaraz for long stretches, but crucial errors cost him, including a dropped serve in the fourth set that proved decisive.

Alcaraz, 22, has shown inconsistency this fortnight, having been pushed to five sets by Fabio Fognini in round one and losing a set to Jan-Lennard Struff in round three.

By contrast, world number one Jannik Sinner has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon, while Novak Djokovic looks ominous after cruising past Miomir Kecmanovic.

Alcaraz, though, remains a formidable force on grass, boasting a 33-3 record on the surface and riding a 22-match winning streak since April.

A five-time Grand Slam winner, the Spaniard is chasing history, hoping to become only the fifth man in the Open era to capture three consecutive Wimbledon titles, joining Borg, Federer, Sampras and Djokovic.
