Carlos Alcaraz overcame a shaky second set to beat Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in his Cincinnati Open opener on Sunday.

Playing his first tournament since losing the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner, the Spaniard stormed through the first set but dropped serve twice in the second before regaining control in the decider.

The second seed sealed victory with his seventh ace as Dzumhur sent match point wide, extending his Masters 1000 winning streak to 12 matches.

Alexander Zverev eased past US wild card Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 6-3, firing 12 aces and not facing a break point.

In-form Ben Shelton progressed 6-3, 3-1 after Camilo Ugo Carabelli retired with a knee injury, while Reilly Opelka upset sixth seed Alex de Minaur 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Adam Walton earned his first top-50 win by defeating 2019 champion Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (0), 6-4, 6-1.

In the women’s draw, defending champion Coco Gauff battled past Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-2, while last year’s runner-up Jessica Pegula beat Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-3. Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini edged Maria Sakkari 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) to advance.
