Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni praised his squad’s depth after a 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup qualifier, despite missing key stars Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez, and Paulo Dybala due to injury.
With the match heading for a draw, Thiago Almada stepped up in the 67th minute, firing home the winner to seal an impressive away triumph in Montevideo.
“The national team is a team. When one is missing, another steps up,” Scaloni said post-match.
“We had some very important absentees, but we have great players to go out on the field. The team is always more than just the names.”
The world champions will now turn their attention to a high-stakes clash against Brazil in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.
