Xabi Alonso says he still feels backed by his Real Madrid players after their 2-1 Champions League loss to Manchester City, despite reports suggesting he could be sacked with another defeat.
He said the team’s effort left him with “nothing to reproach,” noting that the players give everything in training and on the pitch, even as Madrid have won only two of their last eight matches.
Alonso added that results must improve, but believes the situation will pass.
The squad showed their support publicly. Rodrygo, who ended a long goal drought, hugged Alonso after scoring and later said the team wanted to show they were united with the coach.
Defender Raul Asencio also said the players were behind him completely.
Madrid played without top scorer Kylian Mbappe, who was ruled out with knee discomfort. Alonso said it is unclear whether he will be fit for Sunday’s game against Alaves.
