Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United’s Europa League campaign could define the club’s short-term future, even if it can’t rescue a dismal domestic season.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s semi-final at Athletic Bilbao, the United boss underlined the importance of European success amid Premier League struggles that have left his side 14th.
“Everybody knows (the game against Bilbao) it is really important for our season,” Amorim said.
“We know that nothing is going to save our season but this can be huge, winning a trophy and also to get into the Champions League.”
United’s European form has been one of the few bright spots this term, but Amorim admitted the team’s chronic lack of goals continues to cost them.
“We are far from being a really consistent team. We have a clear lack of goals and that has cost us a lot of points this season.”
While some question whether a team so poor domestically deserves a Champions League spot, Amorim was clear: “It’s the rules… If we have that possibility, we should try and reach it.”
