Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has alleged that the recent surge of violence in Plateau State is politically motivated, aiming to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s prospects in the upcoming 2027 elections.

Zazzaga’s remarks follow a tragic Palm Sunday attack in Gariya Waye, Angwan Rukuba, within Jos North Local Government Area, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 20 individuals. This incident has heightened concerns regarding the rising insecurity in the region.

In a statement released on Monday, Zazzaga asserted that the killings were orchestrated by opposition factions intent on hindering Tinubu’s re-election efforts and tarnishing the reputation of Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang. He linked the violence to backlash against Muftwang’s recent defection to the APC, which he claims has bolstered the party’s standing in the North-Central zone.

Zazzaga further contended that the attacks in Plateau and neighboring Benue State are part of a coordinated strategy to diminish the voting power of communities perceived to support Tinubu. He emphasized that the North-Central region had committed to delivering six million votes for the President in 2027, marking it as a crucial political battleground.

“These attacks are intended to instill fear, destabilize communities, and diminish the electorate for the APC,” he stated, adding that such violence aims to portray the federal government as ineffective.

He characterized the North-Central region as Tinubu’s most robust political stronghold, especially with the presence of multiple APC governors.

Zazzaga urged religious leaders to refrain from making incendiary statements, advocating for peace instead. He called on security agencies to monitor divisive rhetoric and take decisive action against those perpetuating violence.

While advocating for proactive measures to combat insecurity, he praised President Tinubu for his visit to Jos following the attacks, describing the gesture as an embodiment of empathy and leadership.
