APC Dominates FCT Chairmanship Polls, PDP Clinches Gwagwalada

Five of the six chairmanship seats contested in the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections have been won by the All Progressives Congress, while the Peoples Democratic Party secured victory in one council.

Results announced on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission showed that the APC emerged victorious in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje, while the PDP clinched the Gwagwalada chairmanship seat.

In Gwagwalada Area Council, the PDP candidate, Mohammed Kasim, was declared winner after polling 22,165 votes to defeat the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who garnered 17,788 votes.

Announcing the result, the Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, said Kasim, having satisfied the legal requirements, was duly returned elected.

A breakdown of the Gwagwalada results showed:
• PDP – 22,165
• APC – 17,788
• APGA – 1,687
• ADC – 1,366

In Bwari Area Council, the APC candidate, Joshua Ishaku, secured victory with 18,466 votes. Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen confirmed Ishaku’s election after meeting the necessary legal requirements.

INEC figures for Bwari indicated:
• APC – 18,466
• ADC – 4,254
• ZLP – 3,515

In the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected after polling 40,295 votes. The AMAC Collation Officer, Andrew Abue, declared him winner following compliance with electoral provisions.

Results released by the commission showed:
• APC – 40,295
• ADC – 12,109
• SDP – 2,185
• NNPP – 1,694
• PDP – 3,398

In Abaji Area Council, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC emerged winner, polling 15,536 votes ahead of other contestants.

INEC results indicated:
• APC – 15,536
• PDP – 4,547
• ADC – 37

Similarly, in Kwali Area Council, APC candidate Nuhu Daniel defeated PDP’s Haruna Pai after polling 17,032 votes against Pai’s 8,575.

INEC figures showed:
• APC – 17,032
• PDP – 8,575

Daniel was subsequently declared elected after securing the highest number of votes.

In Kuje Area Council, APC candidate Danjuma Shekwolo won the chairmanship after polling 17,269 votes.

INEC results showed:

  • APC – 17,269
  • PDP – 15,824
  • APGA – 4,305
