Oswin Appollis scored a late penalty as South Africa edged Zimbabwe 3-2 on matchday three of
the Africa Cup of Nations group stage, sealing qualification as Group B runners-up and ending
the Warriors’ campaign.
Bafana Bafana made a fast start and went ahead in the seventh minute when Tshepang Moremi’s
deflected effort beat Washington Arubi.
Zimbabwe responded through Tawanda Maswanhise, who produced a fine solo goal to level
before half-time.
South Africa regained the lead early in the second half as Lyle Foster capitalised on a defensive
error to nod into an empty net.
Zimbabwe hit back again in the 73rd minute when Aubrey Modiba turned the ball into his own
net under pressure, setting up a tense finale.
The decisive moment arrived late on when Marvelous Nakamba conceded a handball, allowing
Appollis to convert from the spot and secure progression for Hugo Broos’ side.
