Arsenal battled back from the brink to claim a dramatic 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with Mikel Arteta hailing the grit and spirit that he believes can carry his side to the title.
The Gunners looked destined to leave empty-handed after Viktor Gyokeres was denied a penalty by VAR and Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope kept them at bay. Alexander Isak’s strike had the hosts in front until the 84th minute.
But two quick headers from Mikel Merino and Gabriel turned the contest on its head, lifting Arsenal into second place, just two points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
“We fully deserved the win,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “The courage, the determination and the quality we played with today… you have to come to these places and show that conviction.”
The Arsenal boss was left furious with VAR for overturning the penalty call but insisted that such adversity only strengthened his side’s resolve. “That is how you get to a different level,” he said.
