Arsenal moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory
over Chelsea, as Mikel Arteta embraced the “Set-Piece FC” tag.
Headers from William Saliba and Jurrien Timber secured the win at the Emirates,
taking Arsenal’s tally to 16 corner goals this season, equalling the Premier League
record set by Oldham Athletic and West Bromwich Albion.
Chelsea briefly levelled when Piero Hincapie turned in Reece James’ delivery, but
Arsenal’s dead-ball threat proved decisive again.
“We knew the importance of the individual duels at set plays,” Arteta said. “It’s very
important. To have these options is great.”
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton questioned the style, saying, “If they get over
the line, will they be the ugliest Premier League winning team in history?”
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior admitted: “To concede two goals from set plays is very
disappointing. Arsenal are probably the best team in the world at them.”
With Manchester City still chasing with a game in hand, Arsenal’s mastery from
corners could yet define the title race.
