Mikel Arteta has suggested he could extend his stay as Arsenal manager beyond 2027, but insists he must earn the right to do so by delivering silverware.

The Spaniard, who marks six years in charge on Saturday, has won the FA Cup in 2020 but is still chasing league success after Arsenal finished second in each of the last three Premier League seasons.

Asked about a possible extension, Arteta said he was open to the idea but stressed it depended on results. “Yes, but it’s about today. A lot of things have to happen in the next few months to earn the right,” he told reporters.

Arteta added that managers cannot take longevity for granted. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow,” he said.

He rejected claims that Arsenal’s lack of trophies reflects poor performances, pointing to the standards his side have reached.

“You look at the performances and the records we have broken in the history of the club, and we still haven’t managed to win trophies,” Arteta said.

“That tells you the level we are in, which is a level the Premier League has never experienced before.”

Arsenal travel to Everton later on Saturday, sitting two points clear at the top of the table and through to the League Cup quarter-finals.
