Former Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has unleashed a scathing critique of his former Black Stars teammates, labeling them “cowards” for failing to support him after his infamous penalty miss at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana was on the brink of history in the quarterfinals against Uruguay when a last-minute penalty was awarded after Luis Suarez blocked a goal-bound header with his hand. Gyan’s penalty struck the crossbar, and Ghana later lost in a dramatic shootout.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Ghana’s all-time top scorer expressed frustration at the lack of backing he received.
“When the penalty miss happened, I was abused and called names. People said I should have left it for someone else,” Gyan said. “But why didn’t they step up? They were afraid. Cowards. I’ll say it—they are cowards.”
Gyan lamented the silence of his teammates during the storm of public criticism, stating, “The fans can say what they want, but we need to educate them. Yet, nobody spoke up for me.”
