Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an immediate investigation into what he described as “contrived” voter registration figures recorded in Osun State, warning that Nigeria’s electoral credibility could be undermined if the anomaly is ignored.
Speaking through his Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, in Abuja on Thursday, Atiku expressed concern over the stark disparity between Osun’s registration surge and the much lower figures from other states.
“Yes, His Excellency is, of course, concerned about it,” Ibe said.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Osun State recorded about 393,000 new registrations in just over a week of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
By contrast, at least five other states combined reported fewer than 5,000 new registrations within the same period.
Ibe said the discrepancies raised serious questions that must be addressed without delay.
“Any attempt, any plan, or any agenda to inflate figures in particular states or across the country should be thoroughly investigated. There should be an inquiry so that no one is left in doubt, and so that the figures published by INEC are seen as genuine, not contrived,” he stated.
He stressed that urgent action was needed to safeguard public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“There is an urgency to this because what we are trying to do is eliminate every obstacle that could undermine the integrity of the democratic process,” he said.
Atiku’s concerns align with those earlier raised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which had described the Osun registration figures as statistically implausible and demanded clarity from INEC.
