Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hailed the reopening of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office at the National Assembly, describing it as a significant win for democracy and proof that “the voice of reason has triumphed over tyranny.”
Atiku, in a post shared on his official X account, said Natasha’s reinstatement was not just about her personal victory but a statement that democratic institutions can withstand intimidation when people unite to resist injustice.
“It is comforting that reason has finally prevailed with the unsealing of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office. While the time unfairly taken away from the people of Kogi Central cannot be restored, this struggle has not been in vain. It has once more confirmed that collective action is capable of defeating tyranny,” Atiku stated.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, had been suspended from the Senate for six months in March.
On Tuesday, she regained access to her office, Suite 2.05 in the Senate Wing, after it was formally reopened by the Deputy Director of the Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji. Jubilant supporters were on ground, cheering as she re-entered the office.
Although the National Assembly is currently on recess until October 7, 2025, the event sparked widespread reactions nationwide, particularly from the opposition, who viewed it as a victory against political suppression.
Atiku argued that Natasha’s ordeal was emblematic of a larger trend under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which he accused of using state machinery to silence dissent.
He drew parallels between her suspension, the ongoing crisis in Rivers State involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and what he termed the “weaponisation of institutions of state to suppress and intimidate opposition figures.”
“These events are not coincidental; they are clear indicators of the Tinubu administration’s game plan ahead of the 2027 elections—to weaken our democracy and undermine the people’s will by all means possible,” Atiku alleged.
He, however, pledged that the opposition would not stand idle, promising to “resist within the law, defend the people’s mandate, and safeguard democracy against creeping authoritarianism.”
Earlier in the day, Natasha had appeared at the FCT High Court in Abuja for a defamation case filed against her by the Federal Government before proceeding to the National Assembly.
There, she was met with songs, cheers, and open celebration from supporters who welcomed her symbolic return to office.
