Atiku’s Supporters Defect to APC, Pledge Loyalty to Tinubu

As Nigeria’s 2027 general election is fast approaching, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has encountered a substantial political hindrance as a major alliance of his northern stronghold defects to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At an event held in Abuja on Friday, March 7, 2025, Chairman of the APC – Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President – Jibrin Barau formally received members of the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. The switchers, who were instrumental in rallying support for Atiku in the 2023 presidential election, affirmed their loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, referencing his leadership and policies as key factors in their resolution.

The coalition’s coordinator, Abubakar Malami asserted that the group consists of individuals from heterogeneous backgrounds including women, youths, students, traders, academics and farmers. He recounted their efforts in canvassing votes for Atiku during the last election, stressing their dedication to resolving the challenges bedeviling northern Nigeria, specifically insecurity and economic instability. However, he noted that under Tinubu’s administration, the region has witnessed improved security which has positively influenced economic activities.. including farming.

Malami hailed Tinubu’s establishment of the North West Development Commission, acknowledging it as a transformative initiative. He also lauded Barau for his commitment to the northern region.. describing him as the “Sardauna Arewa of our time.”

In his remarks, Barau welcomed the defectors, calling their move a “big catch” for the APC. He underscored Tinubu’s determination to national development and assured the new members of equal opportunities within the party. Ganduje, on his part, lauded their audacity, proclaiming that the PDP is in rapid deterioration and foreseeing its ultimate downfall. He further announced plans to organize a grand reception in Abuja after Ramadan, where President Tinubu and other top government officials would formally receive the new members.

With the defection of these core backers, the political terrain in northern Nigeria continues to shift, paving the way for fierce rivalry ahead of the 2027 elections.
