Atletico Madrid powered to a seventh straight victory in all competitions with a routine 2-0 win over bottom-placed Real Oviedo, who have now gone four matches without a goal.
The hosts struck twice inside the opening 25 minutes, both from Alexander Sorloth, to maintain their unbeaten league run since the opening weekend and record a tenth consecutive home win.
Sorloth set the tone early, bullying his way onto a long ball before being denied by Aaron Escandell, but the Norwegian soon found reward.
He tapped in David Hancko’s teasing cross for the opener, then doubled the lead with a sharp volley after his initial effort was blocked.
Atletico threatened to run riot, while Real Oviedo offered little in response, aside from a tame Federico Vinas header before half-time.
The visitors improved after the restart, with another Vinas header narrowly clearing the bar and chances falling to Salomon Rondon and Santi Cazorla.
But the withdrawal of Sorloth provided some relief for the struggling away side. Atletico, less incisive in the second half, still forced Escandell into further saves through Nicolas Gonzalez, Giuliano Simeone and Conor Gallagher.
Diego Simeone’s team ultimately managed the contest comfortably, tightening their grip on a strong start to the season.
Real Oviedo, meanwhile, remain in deep trouble, winless in over two months and with just seven goals in 14 league outings.
