Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis for a reported €25 million.
The 23-year-old midfielder joins on a five-year contract and becomes the latest addition in Diego Simeone’s squad overhaul following a trophyless 2024-25 season.
“Atletico Madrid and Real Betis have reached a deal for the transfer of the midfielder… who will wear red and white for the next five seasons,” read a club statement on Wednesday.
Cardoso, born in New Jersey, represents the United States internationally but is of Brazilian descent. He also holds an Italian passport, allowing him to be registered as an EU player.
His arrival follows Atletico’s recent capture of Argentina forward Thiago Almada from Botafogo, along with earlier summer signings Alex Baena from Villarreal and Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta.
