Atletico Madrid forward Ángel Correa has been handed a five-match suspension after being sent off and verbally abusing the referee during their 2-1 LaLiga loss to Getafe, Spain’s football federation (RFEF) confirmed on Wednesday.

The Argentine received a straight red card in the 88th minute for a reckless tackle on Djene, following a VAR review.

After his dismissal, Correa repeatedly insulted referee Cuadra Fernández, leading to an extended ban, one match for the red card and four for his remarks.

The 30-year-old will now miss crucial fixtures, including league games against Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, and Valladolid, as well as the second leg of Atletico’s Copa del Rey semi-final against Barça.

Correa has netted seven goals in 38 appearances this season.
