The iconic Awolowo House in Ikeja, Lagos, has been demolished and is undergoing reconstruction into a state-of-the-art technology hub to be known as the Awolowo Technology Mall.

According to a statement, the project is a joint venture between Wemabod and El-Salem Nigeria Limited. The initiative is designed not only to expand commercial space but also to preserve the legacy of the late nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The new complex will more than double the capacity of the original building, increasing from 4,800 square metres to over 9,000 square metres. Speaking on the project, the Managing Director of El-Salem Nigeria Limited, Mr. Ben Gbade Ojo, described the mall as a “one-stop hub for global information technology.”

“This will be a centre where leading ICT firms set up offices, where advanced ICT training is conducted by experts, and where technology challenges are addressed with practical solutions,” Ojo said. “At the Awolowo Technology Mall, virtually every ICT or electronic product available globally will be accessible locally, reducing the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for such products and services.”

The development coincides with a recent report by data analytics firm, Statisense, which ranked Lagos as the world’s fastest-growing emerging technology ecosystem in 2025. Industry observers believe the new facility will further strengthen the city’s reputation as a global technology hub.

“The ongoing development of the Awolowo Technology Mall, already attracting interest from top international firms, will reinforce Lagos’ status as a globally recognised centre for innovation,” analysts remarked.

Expected to become a focal point for technology and innovation, the Awolowo Technology Mall is being positioned as a landmark tribute to Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s enduring legacy of knowledge, discovery, and excellence.
