Former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling a shift in his political journey and a renewed focus on youth empowerment.

In a letter dated January 13 and addressed to Umar Damagum, the acting national chairman of the PDP, Bafarawa cited his dedication to a new movement aimed at empowering and uplifting young Nigerians as the driving force behind his decision.

“This decision, though deeply personal and difficult, is borne out of my commitment to a new chapter of service that aligns with my vision of uplifting humanity through empowering the youth,” Bafarawa wrote.

The two-term governor, who served from 1999 to 2007, acknowledged his long-standing affiliation with the PDP, describing the party as a platform that has significantly shaped Nigeria’s political landscape and contributed to nation-building. However, he explained that his departure was necessary to avoid potential conflicts of interest as he channels his energy into youth-focused initiatives.

“Over the years, I have been honoured to be part of the PDP, a platform that has significantly shaped Nigeria’s political landscape and contributed immensely to nation-building. However, I have recently dedicated myself to a new youth movement that seeks to inspire, empower, and transform the lives of our young people, who are the bedrock of our nation’s future,” the letter further reads.

Bafarawa expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it afforded him to contribute to Nigeria’s democracy and governance. He also commended the party’s leadership and members for their unrelenting efforts to uphold democratic values.

The former governor assured that his new focus would center on creating opportunities for youth empowerment, fostering innovation, and promoting values that pave the way for a prosperous future. “As I transition into this new phase of my life, I seek your understanding and wish the PDP continued success in its endeavours,” he stated.

Bafarawa’s resignation marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly within the PDP, where he once aspired to contest the presidency.

This move aligns with Bafarawa’s earlier decision to step away from active politics. In 2021, he publicly declared that he would no longer seek elective office or accept political appointments, signaling a gradual shift toward non-partisan engagement.

As one of Sokoto State’s prominent political figures, Bafarawa’s departure from the PDP underscores his commitment to inspiring a new generation of leaders and transforming the lives of Nigerian youths.

The former governor’s decision is likely to spark discussions on the evolving role of political leaders in addressing the challenges faced by the nation’s younger population.
