Bayern Munich will pay tribute to late club legend Franz Beckenbauer by displaying his iconic No.5 jersey on the roof of the Allianz Arena, the club announced Tuesday.

A massive 15m x 10m depiction of the retired number has already been installed ahead of Bayern’s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

Beckenbauer, who passed away in January 2024, remains one of football’s greatest figures, having won three European Cups and four German league titles with Bayern, along with two Ballon d’Or awards.

He captained West Germany to World Cup glory in 1974 and later led them to another triumph as a coach in 1990. Beckenbauer also played a key role in the development of the Allianz Arena, which became Bayern’s home in 2005.
