The Federal High Court sitting in Warri has ordered the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to suspend the enforcement of the controversial tinted glass permit policy, pending the determination of a suit challenging its legality.

The directive was issued on Friday in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025: John Aikpokpo-Martins v. Inspector General of Police & Nigeria Police Force.

In its ruling, the court directed the police to maintain the status quo, respect judicial processes, and refrain from any actions that could undermine the ongoing case.

The development was confirmed by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Publicity Secretary, Bridget Edokwe, who explained that the decision effectively restrains the police from implementing the policy until the matter is fully resolved.

The tinted glass permit regulation was originally introduced as a security measure to curb crimes committed with vehicles fitted with darkened windows. However, the policy has faced widespread criticism, with many Nigerians alleging that security operatives abuse its enforcement, leading to harassment, extortion, and violations of citizens’ rights.

The suit, filed by human rights lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins, questions both the legality and enforcement of the policy.

He argues that the permit requirement has been applied arbitrarily and often weaponized against motorists.

With the latest ruling, enforcement of the policy remains suspended until the substantive issues are addressed in court, temporarily limiting the police’s powers on the matter.
