The Nigerian national grid has reportedly collapsed for the 12th time in 2024, plunging several parts of the country into darkness. The incessant collapse is drawing critical concerns from the public about the instability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
As at 3:00pm today, Public Notices from the various Distribution companies including IKEDC, Jos Disco, and AEDC informed their customers about a system disturbance on the national grid at 1:32pm that had caused outage across Franchise areas.
A notice by the Jos Disco read “Dear esteemed Customers,
The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid.”
“The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this afternoon at about 1333 hours of today, Wednesday, 11th December 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.”
“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy. “Thank you for your patience and understanding as we strive to serve you better.”
Dr Friday Adakole Elijah’ Head, Corporate Communications.
The instability of the grid which has now collapsed at least once a month has highlighted the need for a diversified energy strategy, including renewable and alternative power sources.
As citizens and industries face these challenges, the government is under increasing pressure to implement sustainable solutions to mitigate the impacts of these outages.
