On Monday, a fire broke out at the Rivers State secretariat, creating significant alarm among civil servants and the public. Reports indicate that the blaze began on the ground floor of a tall structure known as the Podium after regular business hours and later spread to the offices of the newly established Rivers State Pension Board.
The incident is believed to have started around 4 PM due to an electrical malfunction, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
In a statement to reporters at the scene, the Head of Service confirmed that upon learning of the fire, they immediately contacted the Rivers State Fire Service and other relevant agencies to address the situation.
“We received reports of a fire in the right wing on the ground floor of the Podium Block. We quickly reached out to the Rivers State Fire Service, who responded without delay. We also coordinated with other state partners, including the Renaissance, the Federal Fire Service, and the military, all of whom dispatched their fire trucks to assist. This was truly a collaborative effort, and as you can see, the fire has been brought under control,” she explained.
She expressed gratitude for the proactive measures taken by Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara in enhancing the capabilities of the fire service prior to this incident. “Without his investments in the Fire Service, the outcome could have been much more severe,” she emphasized.
Additionally, she reassured that while there were no casualties, state medical services were present on-site to manage any potential emergencies.
