A tragic mid-air collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter has resulted in a catastrophic crash into the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan National Airport. Emergency response teams, including divers and rescue boats, are actively searching for survivors.

According to officials, the incident occurred at approximately 9:00 PM EST (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday when the Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was on final approach to the airport. The aircraft, which had departed from Wichita, Kansas, collided with the military helicopter before losing control and plunging into the river.

The U.S. Army confirmed that three soldiers were aboard the Black Hawk helicopter, which had taken off from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, shortly before the crash. Details on the condition of those on board both aircraft remain unclear as rescue efforts continue.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as the collision sent debris falling from the sky. “We heard a loud bang, then saw a fireball before the plane broke apart and hit the water,” said a local resident who witnessed the crash from the riverbank.

Authorities have halted all takeoffs and landings at Ronald Reagan National Airport as emergency responders work to manage the situation. The airport confirmed the suspension of operations in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), advising travelers to check with airlines for updates.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the tragedy in a statement, expressing concern and appreciation for first responders. “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” the president said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the crash, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) expected to join the probe. Aviation experts say investigators will be examining air traffic control communications, flight data recorders, and eyewitness accounts to determine the cause of the collision.

This incident marks one of the most serious aviation accidents in recent history involving both civilian and military aircraft. The collision has raised concerns about airspace management around Washington, DC, an area with high-security restrictions due to its proximity to key government institutions.

As rescue efforts continue, officials urge the public to avoid the area to allow emergency teams to work efficiently. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
