Tragedy struck in Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State as a wedding celebration turned fatal following allegations that the bride poisoned food served at the reception. The incident left one guest dead and the groom critically ill, while others who consumed the tainted meal were hospitalized but later discharged.
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing that the bride and another female suspect have been arrested in connection with the alleged poisoning. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Shi’isu Adam, stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the motive behind the shocking act, which some eyewitnesses speculate was driven by a personal vendetta.
“We received a report that the bride had tainted the food served at the wedding reception, leaving the groom in critical condition,” DSP Adam said. “Two suspects, including the bride, are now in custody and being interrogated by the Criminal Investigation Department of the command. We will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served.”
Although the identities of the deceased, the groom, and other victims remain undisclosed, DSP Adam disclosed that all hospitalized guests have been discharged, apart from one person who tragically lost their life.
The wedding, which was expected to be a joyful occasion, descended into chaos as guests reportedly began to feel unwell after consuming the food. Medical intervention helped stabilize most of the affected individuals, but the groom remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Community members and relatives of the victims expressed their shock and disbelief, calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice. An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, described the event as “unimaginable,” adding, “We’ve never seen anything like this. A day meant for celebration has turned into mourning.”
The police have yet to provide details on the alleged accomplice or clarify her role in the incident. However, the spokesperson assured the public that updates would be provided as investigations progress.
