Sergio Busquets has confirmed he will retire from professional football when the MLS season ends in October, bringing down the curtain on one of the most decorated careers in modern football.
The 36-year-old Inter Miami midfielder made the announcement on Instagram after reports from Fabrizio Romano, sharing a tribute video and message thanking football and supporters for “being part of this beautiful story.”
Busquets rose through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and became the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side, mastering the holding midfield role with intelligence, composure, and precise distribution.
He went on to make more than 700 appearances for the Catalan giants, winning nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey crowns, and three UEFA Champions League trophies.
On the international stage, Busquets was a central figure in Spain’s golden generation, lifting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
Known for his reading of the game and positional discipline, he earned 143 caps for La Roja before retiring from international duty in 2022.
After leaving Barcelona in 2023, Busquets joined Inter Miami alongside former teammate Lionel Messi, helping the MLS club to a Leagues Cup title. His final matches in the United States will mark the end of a 16-year career defined by consistency and tactical brilliance.
