The Confederation of African Football has reassured that Morocco will host the 2026 Women’s
Africa Cup of Nations from 17 March to 3 April, ending speculation over the tournament’s
staging.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe addressed the rumors after an Executive Committee meeting
in Dar es Salaam, insisting the tournament will go ahead on schedule.
Morocco was chosen due to its readiness and ability to meet CAF’s high standards.
Motsepe stressed that the dates cannot be changed, as the WAFCON forms part of the
qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. “WAFCON will continue and it will be successful,” he said.
Confusion arose after South Africa Deputy Sports Minister Peace Mabe suggested her country
could step in as host, citing stadium readiness and prior experience.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie later clarified that South Africa’s involvement was only a
contingency plan, with no formal decision to replace Morocco.
The 2026 edition will be the third consecutive WAFCON hosted by Morocco, following the 2022
and 2024 tournaments, keeping North Africa at the centre of African women’s football.
