CAF WEIGHS NEW HOST AS WAFCON 2026 IS DELAYED.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering alternative hosts for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after the tournament was postponed amid
uncertainty over Morocco’s ability to stage the event.
CAF confirmed the competition, originally scheduled for March 17 to April 3, will now
take place from July 25 to August 16, following consultations with FIFA and other
stakeholders.
Reports suggested Moroccan authorities had earlier indicated logistical challenges.
“For several weeks, Morocco has announced internally that it cannot organize the
event in March,” Sports News Africa reported.
CAF is believed to have quietly explored contingency options, with South Africa
among the countries approached.
South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said his country is ready to step in if
needed. “If Morocco is not going to host it, South Africa is standing ready to host,” he
said.
CAF, however, insisted preparations are ongoing. “Preparations for the TotalEnergies
CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 is underway, and all the parties are
confident that it will be very successful,” the body said.
