This month of May 2025, the aviation community, well-wishers, friends and families will gather to celebrate the remarkable 80th birthday of retired Flight Captain Olumuyiwa Olumogba, a pioneer in Nigeria’s aviation sector and a source of inspiration for many. Born on May 15, 1945, in Idanre, Ondo State, Captain Olumogba has dedicated his life to the skies and has left an indelible mark on the industry.
Captain Olumogba’s journey into aviation was not a conventional one. Originally with aspirations in medicine, he stumbled upon his passion for flying after witnessing pilots in their distinguished uniforms. “I never planned to be a pilot,” he recalls. “It was after secondary school that I realized the requirements for pursuing a career and what came to mind was Medicine. This actually prompted me to seek A-level education.” Despite not completing his A-levels, an opportunity arose that took him abroad to study, ultimately leading him to discover aviation.

After obtaining a private pilot license in England, he trained further in Canada, where he honed his skills and became a proficient pilot. His career began in earnest when he was recruited by the Nigerian government in 1973, marking the start of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s aviation history. He played a pivotal role in developing the Lagos Flying Club, training aspiring pilots and contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Throughout his illustrious career, Captain Olumogba faced challenges, including the realities of racism abroad. Yet, his determination and commitment to his homeland prevailed. “It’s better to stay back home and take the opportunities,” he advises. “There is nothing about abroad; it’s better to just visit and not be desperate to go.” His insights reflect a deep love for Nigeria and a desire to see its aviation industry flourish.

As he reflects on his 80 years, Captain Olumogba expresses gratitude for his family. “I thank God for my children and grandchildren,” he shares, encouraging his grandchildren to pursue careers in aviation, with two already showing interest. His advice to the youth is clear: “Focus your energy on things that interest you. Don’t pursue a career simply because others are doing it. Every profession has value if you are serious and committed.”
As we honor Captain Olumuyiwa Olumogba on this momentous occasion, we celebrate not only his achievements but also the spirit of perseverance and commitment to excellence that he embodies. Happy 80th birthday, Captain Olumogba. Your journey has inspired many, and your contributions to Nigerian aviation will never be forgotten.
