Christmas Eve Terror: Explosion Rocks Packed Maiduguri Mosque

At least five worshippers were killed when a bomb exploded inside a crowded mosque in Borno State, police have confirmed.
Police spokesman Nahum Daso said the blast occurred during evening prayers at the Gamboru market in Maiduguri, the state capital, leaving about 35 others injured..

Unverified footage on social media appears to show the aftermath of the explosion, with people standing in a market area with dust particles in the air.No group has admitted carrying out the attack, but militants have previously targeted mosques and crowded places in the area with suicide attacks and improvised explosive devices (IED).

One of the leaders of the mosque, Malam Abuna Yusuf, put the toll at eight dead, though officials have not yet released a casualty count.“We can confirm there has been an explosion,” police spokesman Nahum Daso told AFP, adding that an explosive ordnance disposal team was already on-site.Kolo said that seven were killed.He said it was suspected that the bomb was placed inside the mosque and exploded midway through prayers, while some witnesses described a suicide bombing.
