A Copa Sudamericana last-16 tie in Buenos Aires was abandoned on Wednesday after violent clashes between supporters of Independiente and Universidad de Chile left at least ten people seriously injured and more than 300 arrested.

The second leg at the Estadio Libertadores de América descended into chaos when missiles, including a stun grenade, were hurled at half-time.

The situation worsened early in the second half as Independiente fans appeared to force their way into the away section, attacking visiting supporters. Some were beaten and stripped as they fled the violence.

The game, which stood at 1-1 on the night with Universidad leading 2-1 on aggregate, was suspended with players leaving the field.

South American governing body Conmebol later confirmed the match was officially cancelled, citing a lack of security guarantees from both the club and local authorities. The matter has now been referred to its disciplinary bodies.

Chile’s president Gabriel Boric condemned the violence, describing it as “wrong in too many ways, from the violence among the supporters to the evident irresponsibility in the organisation.”

He stressed that priority must be given to the medical treatment of injured Chilean supporters and the protection of detained fans’ rights.

The shocking scenes have reignited debate over crowd violence in South American football, with authorities facing renewed calls for stricter measures to ensure the safety of players and supporters alike.
