The Forum of State Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) has explained why 16 of its members recently pledged support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement signed by its leaders — Kasim Mabo (National Chairman), Sulaiman Oyaremi (National Secretary), Olalekan Obolo (South-West Coordinator), Enyinnaya Ibiam Nnachi (South-East Coordinator), and Ahmad Dawayo (North-East/North-West Coordinator) — the Forum blamed the defections on the continued marginalisation of the CPC bloc within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group lamented that despite being one of the major pillars that formed the APC, the CPC structure has been sidelined in appointments and political recognition since the party came to power.
The Forum clarified that it has not collectively endorsed Atiku Abubakar for the next general elections, insisting that 20 of its 37 members remain committed to the APC and to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. It added that one member has passed away, while 16 have individually chosen to support Atiku.
The leaders accused opposition elements of luring their members with financial and political offers, explaining that nine members defected earlier while seven more recently joined them.
They urged President Tinubu and the APC leadership to urgently address the neglect of the CPC bloc, warning that the alienation could worsen if left unresolved. The Forum reminded the party that it represents the grassroots structures that delivered the historic 12.5 million votes for the late President Muhammadu Buhari, which formed the foundation of the CPC’s national strength.
Reaffirming loyalty to key CPC legacy leaders, including former governors Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and Aminu Bello Masari, as well as Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, the Forum called for greater inclusion and recognition within the APC.
“We remain loyal, patient, but firm in our resolve to demand better patronage,” the statement read. “We pray for divine guidance for President Tinubu and all leaders of our party as they work to unite the coalition and deliver good governance to Nigerians.”
