CRYSTAL PALACE

Crystal Palace began the new campaign in the same way they ended the last, clutching silverware at Wembley.

The FA Cup holders toppled Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after a gripping 2-2 draw in the Community Shield.

Dean Henderson emerged as the shootout hero, denying Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott after Mohamed Salah blasted over.

Substitute Justin Devenny, 21, smashed home the decisive kick to seal Palace’s second major trophy in three months.

Liverpool’s £116m record signing Florian Wirtz teed up Hugo Ekitike for an early opener, but Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled from the spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr.

Jeremie Frimpong restored Liverpool’s lead with a looping effort, only for Sarr to equalise again after the break.

Ekitike missed two clear chances to kill the contest, and Palace nearly snatched victory in stoppage time through Devenny before prevailing on spot-kicks.

The victory made Palace the first club to win the Community Shield on debut since Derby County in 1975.
