In a bold move towards enhancing Nigeria’s industrial landscape, Aliko Dangote has announced the submission of an application for the establishment of a large-scale seaport in Olokola, Ogun State. This initiative, which aligns with his long-term vision for the region, aims to bolster the country’s energy sector and create a streamlined supply chain for industrial products.
Dangote, who has conceptualized this site for over a decade as the future home of a refinery and fertilizer complex, emphasized the strategic importance of the port in facilitating the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), fertilizers, and fuels. He stated, “Our ambition is clear: to build Nigeria’s largest deep-sea seaport, which will serve as an anchor for our energy aspirations.”
The business mogul clarified that his intentions are not to monopolize the market but rather to inspire fellow African entrepreneurs to invest in much-needed infrastructure. “It is our responsibility to create it when the state alone cannot provide it,” he remarked.
As part of this initiative, Dangote is also spearheading a project to construct a gas pipeline connecting the Niger Delta to Olokola, tapping into the region’s abundant gas resources. He envisions this pipeline as a vital energy backbone for Nigeria, facilitating the export of gas to international markets and positioning Nigeria as a serious contender in the LNG market.
In a significant operational extension, starting August 2025, Dangote plans to launch a fleet of 4,000 tanker trucks to distribute fuels nationwide. “This is not an attempt at hegemony, but a necessity,” he explained, underscoring the importance of mastering logistics to ensure efficient supply from Africa’s largest refinery.
Despite facing criticism, Dangote remains steadfast in his commitment to job creation, infrastructure development, and the stimulation of an industrial ecosystem. “Nigeria deserves a strong and integrated model capable of competing with the largest economies,” he asserted.
With the Olokola seaport project, Dangote aims to complete the puzzle of his industrial vision, which already includes cement, sugar, fertilizers, and a refinery. This project promises to transform Nigeria’s coastline into a logistics and energy hub, reduce reliance on congested ports, and attract new investments.
In conclusion, Dangote’s plans reflect a long-term vision for an industrialized and competitive Nigeria, driven by African ingenuity and ambition.
