Grammy-nominated Afrobeats star Davido has opened up about how his collaboration with Omah Lay on the song “With You” came to life, revealing that it all started with a surprising tweet and a chance moment during a livestream.
Speaking in a video, the DMW boss explained that the collaboration followed an unexpected reaction from Omah Lay after Davido played his song during a livestream with popular American streamer Kai Cenat.
According to Davido, Kai Cenat was visiting Nigeria at the time, and while Davido was driving him to a club, one of Omah Lay’s songs came on. Kai, impressed, asked who the artist was, and Davido proudly introduced Omah Lay as one of the hottest acts in the industry.
The moment later resurfaced online when Omah Lay tweeted his surprise at being mentioned by Davido, admitting he had previously thought the superstar disliked him. The tweet caught Davido off guard.
“I was surprised when I saw the tweet,” Davido said. “I DMed him and asked, ‘Why would you think I hate you? We’ve never even met.’”
That conversation marked the beginning of their relationship. Davido revealed that the two artists soon exchanged phone numbers and began sharing music ideas. Over time, they recorded about four songs together.
Ultimately, Omah Lay selected “With You” as the track they would officially release, sealing what fans now see as a major Afrobeats collaboration born from a simple misunderstanding and a viral livestream moment.
